When is it Appropriate to Use Stand-Off Systems (Point-Point Piers) in a Display?

Point-to-Point Piers, Fixed or Articulated

Choosing between fixed vs articulated piers comes down to one question: what are the two surfaces you are actually mounting to, and do they sit parallel to each other or not? Point-to-point piers, also called stand-offs, are the hardware behind a tensioned cable display rather than a track-based one, and picking the right pier type depends entirely on the geometry of the space you are working with.

A standoff is mounting hardware that holds a panel, sign, or object at a fixed distance from the wall or another surface. AS Hanging Display Systems calls its version a Pier, and the mechanism is slightly different from a simple wall-mounted standoff: a Pier anchors a taut steel cable between two opposing surfaces, such as a floor and ceiling, and that cable is what carries the hooks, clamps, or acrylic pockets holding the displayed piece. The result is a Tensioned System, engineered-looking, permanent, and visually very different from a suspended track.

Fixed vs Articulated Piers: What's the Difference?

Fixed Piers mount to two opposing, parallel, horizontal surfaces, most often a floor and ceiling, or an upper window case and sill. They are typically installed in pairs and work well anywhere that pairing exists cleanly: window merchandising, a floor-to-ceiling signage run, a directory panel between two fixed points.

Articulated Piers solve a problem Fixed Piers cannot. Each one is built with an elbow hinge, so the pier can mount to a ceiling, a floor, a wall, or any other available surface, including one that is angled or vaulted. Because the elbow lets the fitting pivot, the cable itself still hangs vertically no matter what angle the mounting surface is at. That single design detail is what makes Articulated Piers the right choice the moment your two mounting surfaces are not a clean, parallel pair. AS Hanging's Articulated Pier Sets swivel 180 degrees and rotate up to 360 degrees, which covers most irregular ceiling and wall combinations you will run into on site.

  • Mounting surfaces: Fixed Piers need two flat, parallel, horizontal surfaces. Articulated Piers work with angled, vaulted, or mismatched surfaces thanks to the elbow hinge.

  • Typical setting: Fixed Piers suit a straightforward floor-to-ceiling or sill-to-header run. Articulated Piers suit lobbies, atriums, or any space where the ceiling or wall line is not a simple flat plane.

  • Cable orientation: Fixed Piers hold the cable at whatever angle the two mounting points naturally create. Articulated Piers keep the cable vertical regardless of the angle the pier itself is mounted at.

  • Complexity and cost: Fixed Piers are the simpler hardware and generally the more economical option when your surfaces already line up.

Mounting Piers Safely: Wall Strength and Mounting Plates

Both pier types are used with steel cables, and the hooks or clamps you add depend on what you are displaying. The detail that matters most during installation is what the pier is actually anchored into.

Because a tensioned cable puts angular force on its mounting point, that force can exceed the crush strength of ordinary gypsum board, particularly in commercial installations where the displayed load is heavier or the cable run is longer.

For that reason, mounting piers to a rigid or structural surface, including masonry or glass walls with the right fasteners, is strongly preferred over mounting directly into drywall wherever that option exists.

When drywall is the only available mounting surface, AS Hanging offers Mounting Plates for Articulated Piers and a matching Mounting Plate for Fixed Piers, both designed to spread that load across a larger area of the wall rather than concentrating it at a single point.

If you are unsure whether your specific wall, ceiling, or floor assembly can safely carry a pier-based display, that is a question worth confirming with our Customer Support team before installation rather than estimating it on site.

Choosing Between Fixed and Articulated for Your Project

The fixed vs articulated piers decision really does come down to your mounting surfaces. If both anchor points are flat, parallel, and horizontal, such as a straightforward floor-to-ceiling run, Fixed Piers are the simpler and typically more economical choice. If either surface is angled, vaulted, or otherwise irregular, or if the two mounting points are not a clean parallel pair, Articulated Piers are built to handle that variation without changing how the finished display hangs.

Once that mounting decision is made, a pier-based tensioned system behaves just like a track-based one for everything else: the same cables, the same range of hooks and fittings, the same ability to display art, signage, directories, or dividers with a clean, engineered line.

A retail window vignette anchored floor-to-ceiling is a natural fit for Fixed Piers, since the storefront's floor and header are already a clean parallel pair. A lobby display beneath a vaulted or angled ceiling, on the other hand, is exactly the situation Articulated Piers were designed for, since the elbow hinge absorbs the ceiling's angle without tilting the displayed piece. A gallery or museum installation might use either, depending on whether the architecture itself gives you two flat opposing surfaces to work with.

Photographing or measuring the actual mounting surfaces before ordering hardware is worth the extra step. It is much easier to confirm parallel, flat surfaces from a tape measure and a level than to discover mid-installation that a ceiling has more pitch than it appeared to from the floor.
