What is the formula for hanging paintings?

Designers and galleries often follow a simple formula to achieve perfect picture height:

  1. Start with the “magic number” rule.
    Measure 57 to 60 inches (145 to 152 cm) from the floor. This is average eye level.
  2. Find the center of your artwork.
    Measure the total height of the frame and divide by two.
  3. Account for the hanging hardware.
    Measure the distance between the top of the frame and where the wire or hook will rest. Subtract this number from half the frame height.
  4. Apply the formula.
Eye Level (57-60")
+ Half of Artwork Height
- Distance from Top to Wire/Hook
= Nail / Hook Placement Height

Example:

  • Frame height = 30 inches -> half = 15 inches
  • Wire sits 5 inches below the top
  • Eye level = 57 inches

-> 57 + 15 - 5 = 67 inches from floor to hook/nail

With AS Hanging Display Systems, you don’t need to calculate every time. Our track-and-cable systems let you easily adjust up or down after installation, so your artwork always hangs at the right height without patching wall holes.
