Hang artwork so the bottom of the frame sits about 6 to 12 inches above the top of the furniture. That spacing keeps the picture visually connected to the piece below while leaving enough open wall so the grouping does not feel cramped. The exact number within that range depends on the height of the furniture, the size of the art, and how the wall reads from across the room.
Spacing by furniture type
Different pieces call for slightly different gaps. Use these starting points and adjust by eye once the art is on the wall.
- Above a sofa or console: leave roughly 8 to 10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
- Above a bed headboard: go a little higher, around 10 to 12 inches, so the art balances with the taller piece beneath it.
- Above low furniture such as a bench or credenza: about 6 to 8 inches is usually enough.
Keep the proportions and eye level in mind
Spacing is only part of a balanced look. Scale matters just as much. As a guide, the artwork (or the full grouping) should be close to two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it, so the piece feels anchored rather than lost on the wall. Where it works, apply the 57 inch rule and keep the center of the art near 57 inches from the floor, which lines up with average eye level. When a furniture gap and the 57 inch center pull in different directions, favor a comfortable visual relationship to the furniture, since that is what the eye notices first.
For a grouping rather than a single frame, treat the whole arrangement as one composition and measure from the lowest piece, starting that bottom edge about 6 to 12 inches above the furniture. Our guide to gallery wall layouts and spacing walks through how to plan the overall shape before anything goes on the wall.
Fine-tuning height with a rail system
One advantage of hanging above furniture is that the ideal height often takes a little experimentation, and a rail makes that easy. With a picture hanging rail system, you set the track once, then slide the hooks side to side and raise or lower the cables until the spacing above the sofa, headboard, or console looks right. You can refine the position without measuring for new holes or patching the wall, which is helpful when you swap art seasonally or rearrange the furniture below.
