In normal use, picture hanging cables and cords do not mark or stain walls. Stainless steel cable and nylon cord hang straight down with little or no contact against the paint, so they are not the usual culprit. When people do spot a mark, it almost always comes from the back of the frame touching and rubbing the wall, not from the suspension itself.
Why marks sometimes appear

- Frame corners resting against the wall. When the top edge tilts forward, the lower corners can press into and scuff the paint.

Simple ways to prevent scuffs
Most wall marks are easy to avoid with small adjustments. A frame stabilizer or counterweight stabilizer keeps the piece flush and limits tilt and wobble. For wider or heavier frames, hanging from two vertical supports rather than one greatly reduces side to side swing. Wipe dust from the back of frames before hanging, and keep stainless steel cable clean and dry, since it will not stain when it is free of grime. In humid or sunny rooms, replacing nylon cord on a regular schedule keeps it looking clear. It also helps to recheck bumpers and stabilizers during seasonal cleaning.
