The rule of 57 is a hanging-height guideline: position the center of your artwork about 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor, which matches average eye level. It gives single pieces, groupings, and gallery walls a consistent, professional look. The catch most people miss is translating that center point into the correct hook height, so the finished art actually lands where you planned.
Why 57 inches works
Fifty-seven inches is the average human sightline, so art centered there reads as natural and balanced the moment you walk in. It is the same reference museums and galleries use, which is why a roomful of pieces set to a common center looks intentional rather than scattered. The rule applies whether you are hanging one canvas or a whole wall.
The part people get wrong: where the hook goes
The 57 inches marks the center of the art, not where you drive the hook. To place the hook correctly, work in two steps. First, find the top of the frame: add half the frame's height to 57. A 30-inch-tall frame, for example, has its top at 57 plus 15, or 72 inches. Second, subtract the drop, meaning the distance from the top of the frame down to the taut hanging wire or hook point. That final number is your hook height. Skipping this step is the single most common reason art ends up hung too high.
When to adjust the rule
- Higher ceilings: designers often shift to 58 to 60 inches so the art balances the taller proportions.
- Over furniture: above a sofa, console, or headboard, nudge the height to sit in comfortable relation to the piece rather than defaulting to 57.
- Gallery walls: measure to the center of the whole grouping, treating the arrangement as one shape, and align that center to 57.
